Job Description

Service Care Solutions are recruiting on behalf of a local authority in Portsmouth for a Principal Auditor.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the delivery of Audit and Counter Fraud services, ensuring the effectiveness of internal control systems for both the Local Authority and its external clients.

The successful candidate will play a key role in advising senior officers and members on risk management, enhancing internal control frameworks, and driving continuous improvement.

You will also lead innovative research in auditing techniques, particularly in data analysis, to support the Council's governance and accountability.

Main responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of Audit and Counter Fraud services for the Local Authority and external clients, ensuring effective internal control systems.


• Advise senior officers and members on managing risk and enhancing internal control frameworks to support strategic objectives.


• Conduct in-depth audits focusing on key risks, ensuring controls are in place and operating efficiently.


• Promote continuous improvement and support managers in optimizing their system controls.


• Conduct research on new auditing techniques, particularly in data analysis, and lead initiatives in this area.


• Ensure objective, independent, and unbiased assessment to support the Council's governance and accountability.

Candidate Requirements

• A professional accounting or auditing qualification, along with relevant membership.


• Public Sector Internal Audit Standards (PSIAS): Demonstrated knowledge and experience of compliance with PSIAS.


• At least 2 years of experience in conducting audits, including contract auditing, across a variety of areas.


• Proven experience in operating at both strategic and operational levels in auditing.


• Strong understanding and experience in corporate governance, including risk management and internal control frameworks.


• Ability to interpret complex legislation, provide specialist advice, and resolve complex issues with strong analytical skills.
