Role: Evidence Management Officer


Salary: £12.18 per hour


Contract: 6 months or more


As an Evidence Management Officer, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the efficient processing of all evidential property received by the police.

You will meticulously manage the security, storage, and disposal of evidential property while providing a high-quality service to both external and internal customers.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Take full accountability for the management, continuity, and safety of all physical evidence held within the Evidence Management Unit (EMU).

    Attend court proceedings, when required, to account for evidential property in support of various prosecutions and civil proceedings.

  • Assess, prepare, and dispose of property in strict accordance with legislation, policy, and procedural guidelines outlined in the Evidence Portal.

    This includes banking cash and creating manifests for the disposal of dangerous and/or illegal items of property.

    Ensure compliance with random audits conducted by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC), the Professional Standards Department (PSD), and the Criminal Justice Senior Management Team.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in evidence management, providing advice and support to officers and staff involved in evidence management.

    Assist in organizing training events for staff and offer guidance on packaging, maintaining evidence continuity, and integrity.

  • Identify and resolve issues related to evidence management, such as managing the retention process for frozen materials.

    Conduct regular quality control and assurance checks to ensure evidence is maintained in optimal conditions for maximum recovery.

    Report critical issues promptly and escalate matters as necessary.

  • Maintain an efficient storage system to ensure effective space management.

    Support specific operations aimed at purging legacy evidence and property held by the Reading Police Force, facilitating swift evidence retrieval and compliance with relevant health and safety regulations.

    Conduct necessary daily checks.

  • Uphold the security of the Evidence Management Unit and storage areas to prevent unauthorized access.

    Be available for "out of hours" duties when required.

  • Manage the storage and transportation of hazardous, high-risk, or high-value items of property, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations and appropriate risk management protocols.


  • Join the Reading Police Force as an Evidence Management Officer and contribute to the integrity of criminal investigations.
