Housing Options Officer

A local authority in the South West is recruiting for a Housing Options Officer to actively support the prevention of homelessness by providing a comprehensive housing options and advice service, on an initial 3 month contract

The Role
In this Housing Options Officer role, you will be working with clients, offering them a comprehensive housing options service to help them move in to suitable accommodation and prevent their becoming homeless.

In this you will be expected to:



  • Hold a case load of customers who are homeless or in housing need.

  • Assess the needs of approaching customers, providing advice on housing options and homelessness services.

  • To actively work with customers to ensure homelessness is prevented; where possible, assisting customers to retain existing housing or, where this is not possible, to secure alternate accommodation.

  • To investigate homelessness cases and reach decisions on applications made; in accordance with legislation and relevant case law.

  • To ensure the council complies with its statutory duties and in accordance with current legislation.

  • To provide advice on tenancy rights, welfare and benefits advice, referrals to wider support agencies and working with partner agencies to provide an holistic approach to addressing homelessness and housing need.

  • To ensure that appropriate risk assessments are carried out and referrals are made as necessary for those clients moving in to temporary accommodation.

  • To work with the Temporary Accommodation Officer to make temporary accommodation placements and arrange for removals and storage.




The Candidate
Too be considered for this Housing Options Officer role you will require previous experience working within housing options or homelessness prevention and have good knowledge of the belowf:



  • Working with housing clients at risk of homelessness

  • Knowledge of the housing benefits system

  • Understanding of the Housing Act (1996) and the Homeless Reduction Act (2017)

  • You will require good levels of administration and IT skills



Due to the nature of clients you will be supporting in this role, you will require an enhanced DBS.

The Contract
This is a temporary, Housing Options Officer role, for an initial 12 weeks, though this is likely to be extended or potentially made permanent.

The working hours are 9-5 Monday to Friday.


The role is remote working, though some presence in the Totnes or Tavistock Office will be required.
