Our client is a Legal 200 firm operating from a couple of offices in Southern England.

They are undertaking a period of expansion and pride themselves on their long history and traditional approach to law.

They operate a hybrid working model which involves a mixture of working in the office and at home.

Consideration will be given to applicants willing to relocate to this highly attractive location, and to solicitors or Legal Executives living in the area with people management experience in private family law.

They are now seeking to recruit a Head of Department (Family).

Head of Department (Family)– Job Duties

What is expected of you?

The ideal candidate will be a qualified solicitor or Legal Executive living in the Wiltshire area or prepared to relocate, probably with at least seven years’ PQE.

He or she will manage a team of five.

The key objectives and responsibilities are as follows:


  • Provide legal advice to clients within the family law field and to assist others in providing such advice.
  • Provide effective leadership and direction to the partners and staff in the Family Team (“the Team”).
  • Achieve performance targets as agreed, within the context of expanding the Team and strengthening the scope of family law services offered by the Firm.


  • Advise on matters involving divorce, finances, separation, injunctions, civil partnerships, cohabitation disputes, pre and post nuptial agreements and Children Act work.
  •  Assist and support others in the Team in connection with family law work.
  • Liaise and work with others in the Firm where family law expertise is required.


  • Report to the Litigation Team Leader or such other person as is nominated to you from time to time as to performance and progress towards agreed objectives of the Team.


  • Work with colleagues to formulate a plan to retain and develop relationships with existing clients and referrers and to acquire new clients for the Team.
  • Ensure that the Team contributes time and staff to firm-wide initiatives when required.
  • Implement agreed cross-selling initiatives, working on the basis that the client belongs to the Firm and not to any one individual.
  • Implement agreed client care processes.
  • Implement the development of new "products" and service co-ordinating, as appropriate, with other teams.


  • Act as mentor to partners and staff in the Team.

    Also act as appraiser where appropriate.
  • Participate in recruitment processes for the expansion (in line with agreed plans) and, if required, the replacement of lawyers and support staff in the Team.
  • Support lawyers in the Team in achieving their technical potential through allocation of work.

    Also assist in the development of client management and marketing skills.
  • Ensure that all partners and staff in the Team work cohesively and are mutually supportive.
  • Conduct regular analyses of training needs for all partners and staff in the Team and ensure that in conjunction with the HR Director, a training plan is implemented.
  • Troubleshoot as necessary.


  • Work with colleagues to agree and then deliver the agreed budget contribution of the Team (fees and other income less direct expenses) for the financial year.
  • Achieve for the Team agreed financial discipline targets, including conversion of WIP, recovery rates, debtors, and funding of unbilled disbursements.
  • Apply agreed processes for managing credit risk.

    Quality/Risk Management:
  • Ensure adherence to the Firm's Best Practice Protocol throughout the Team.
  • Ensure that agreed supervision and audit processes are actively operated.
  • Periodically review the risk management processes being applied within the Team and ensure than an adequate means of communication exists for concerns to be raised at all levels and addressed as appropriate.


  • Exploit all technology and case management processes as part of a means of control over work and risk management and to achieve as much standardisation as possible.
  • Seek to implement workflow processes as a means of adherence to the Firm's Best Practice processes.
  • Ensure that all partners and staff are adequately trained in the technologies available
