We have an exciting opportunity for a Modern Matron – Medical & Surgical (Band 8a equivalent) to join our Medical ^ Surgical Clients Team.

Job Description

To provide leadership for the nursing staff across the inpatient surgical/ medical service, acting as a point of contact for advice and expertise on all matters relating to the surgical/ medical pathways (Inpatient, pre-admission and day case) in collaboration with the Head of Quality (Nursing) and Director of Nursing.

Duties & Responsibilities


  • To provide visible, inclusive and approachable clinical leadership for nurses, patient and families in the medical/surgical service.

    The post holder will inspire and motivate others, enabling the ward managers to have the skills, authority and autonomy they need to continuously improve the patient safety and experience.
  • To collaborate with the Heads of Service to empower the ward managers and CNSs to deliver outstanding person-centred care and providing assurance of this to the Executive Team this supporting the delivery of TLC strategy.
  • To provide expert clinical advice for staff and promote strong links between primary and secondary care services in order to effectively manage the needs of both patients and consultants.
  • To lead and focus on continuous quality improvement - improving person centred care, financial sustainability, preventing hospital acquired infection; improving standards of clinical care, patient experience and treating patients with dignity and respect.
  • The Modern Matron is responsible for leading by example; ensuring that staffing levels meet patient needs; empowering nurses to take on a wider range of clinical tasks; ensuring that patients’ needs are met; improving wards for patients and resolving problems for patients and their relatives by building close therapeutic relationships with them.

Skills & Experience


  • Registered General Nurse with valid NMC registration
  • In-depth experience in acute hospital nursing leadership role with mentorship and clinical supervision experience
  • Experience within corporate & clinical governance issues and national and local policies and how they impact on service provision
  • Demonstrable facilitation skills and the ability to organise and chair meetings with Quality Improvement methodology knowledge
