Hr Advisor

Main duties and responsibilities

Provision of Advice and Support

  • To pro-actively provide appropriate, high quality, professional HR advice and support to an agreed set of customers on all HR issues both individual and collective, challenging inappropriate attitudes and practice and seeking to achieve improvements.

  • At the direction of the Employee Relations Manager to give advice and provide support, briefings and surgeries on HR issues.

  • To respond to email and telephone requests for advice and support from Brigade managers on HR issues, seeking guidance where necessary and copying answers of general interest to the team's shared email drive for information.

  • To prepare and present briefing sessions to staff and managers on a range of people issues and policies as required.


  • To lead in the management of complex sickness, disciplinary, probation, capability and grievance cases in conjunction with line managers.

  • To liaise with General Counsel, Counselling and Trauma, Inclusion, the Occupational Health Service, other sections within People Services, and trade union representatives in order to progress individual cases as appropriate.

  • To co-ordinate the Brigade's response on complex cases, and to assist managers in the preparation of cases for formal meetings.

    To attend Employment Tribunals as required.

  • To prepare reports, correspondence and documentation as necessary

Promoting HR Policies and Procedures

  • As a member of the HR Advisers Team, to assist the Brigade in developing best practice in all HR performance/information issues, acting as a champion for cultural change in accordance with Brigade policies and procedures.

  • To assist in the achievement of Brigade People Services targets and performance indicators, including sickness, utilising both established methods and also assisting the Employee Relations Manager in developing innovative, proactive techniques.

  • To consult, and obtain feedback from, managers and staff on People Services policies and procedures, the services provided by People Services department and ways in which they can be improved/modernised.

  • To audit the application of People Services policies and procedures and provide feedback to the Employee relations Manager and local managers as appropriate.

  • To identify customer HR needs and ensure that these are met directly or via the appropriate level of management and/or section of the People Services Department.

Project work and policy development

  • To assist, as required, in the review and development of corporate personnel policies, procedures, and management guidance.

  • To undertake research into people issues and make recommendations to People Services management as required.

  • To lead or participate in project work relating to Brigade People Services policies and procedures.
